Graduate Symposium 2019

The fourth St Catharine’s Graduate Symposium will take place on Sunday 17th of February 2019, in the McGrath Centre, from 9:30am to 4:30pm. The Graduate Symposium is an annual celebration of the interdisciplinary research conducted at St Catharine’s College, featuring talks that highlight the work of current students, distinguished alumni and other members of St Catharine’s community.

Among the confirmed speakers for this year, we are pleased to highlight Professor Peter St George-Hyslop, one of the world's top neurodegenerative disease researchers.

His laboratory has discovered key genes and proteins associated with Alzheimer’s Disease, which accelerated our understanding of this disease, and laid the foundation for decades of subsequent research. He has received several important awards and recognition throughout his career.

We will also have the pleasure to hear Dr Luca Aiello, a Senior Research Scientist in the Social Dynamics team at Bell Labs Cambridge, UK. At Bell labs he conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of computational social science, network science, and urban informatics. Among his initiatives, he is the co-founder of goodcitylife.org, a global network of scientists with the goal of giving a good life to city dwellers. There, he developed Happy Maps, which uses social media to capture cities’ ambiance and to build alternative map routes based on human emotions.

Tickets are priced at £2, including refreshments and lunch. Speakers will be invited for dinner. You can register to attend the Symposium Register to attend the Symposium here.

For Catz Students

The Graduate Symposium is an incredible opportunity to present your work to a wider audience. As a result, we invite you to submit an abstract for a short presentation. In previous years, this has been a great showcase of the range of student research and an amicable forum for discussions, so we would encourage any (and all) students to apply! Those selected to speak will be invited to the formal dinner at the OCR after the Symposium, which gives you the chance to meet our guest speakers and promises to be an enjoyable evening. Abstract submission is via the registration link (here) and the deadline for abstracts is the 20th of January.
